This page has different resources that are important for Navigators to know for assisting people with housing issues. This is not for referring to patients, it is for navigator use. 

Here are a few definitions to help Navigators through the housing process:

Subsidized Housing: Housing rent based on about 30% of income for low-income individuals and families. Every apartment complex and management company have a different process for accepting applications. Private landlords receive subsidies in exchange for renting to low-income people.

Public Housing: Public Housing is owned by the housing authority owns your building and is your landlord. In a few cases, a private company may manage the building for the housing authority or may be a part of the ownership. Individuals apply for public housing through the housing authority

Section 8 Housing: Provides vouchers for low-income rentals anywhere that accepts vouchers. Individuals apply for a Section 8 voucher through the housing authority.

  • In the City of Madison housing resources are distributed through the Community Development Authority (CDA).

  • In Dane County, excluding the City of Madison, resources are distributed through the Housing Authority of Dane County (HADC).
